Wilderness Camp at the Outdoors Show 2009

The outdoors show has always been a momentus occasion for Bushcraft & Survival Skills Magazine. It was there in March 2006 that we launched the very first issue of the magazine and then , for the next three consecutive years, we have sponsored 'The Wilderness Camp' feature, where we provided a host of bushcraft activities for the show visitor to have a go at and a host of guest speakers, covering a variety of Bushcraft-related subjects.

This year we celebrated our third birthday with a 200 square metre stand, allowing for a stage and a fire-lighting area run by our fire-lighting expert, Dave Watson. Ian 'Max' Maxwell and his instructors taught tracking skills in our tracking pit and Ulrika Stridsberg, master-smith from Gransfors Bruks, and here colleague Julia, demonstrated how to hand-forge an axe and a knife.

Operation Firesaw - The Sequel

See how John got to grips with firelighting at the Outdoors Show 2008...

After John and his troop attempted to use the firesaw firelighting method in Afghanistan (Operation Firesaw Film), Bushcraft & Survival Skills Magazine arranged for John and his wife Sam to go on a weekend bushcraft course with Dave Watson and his team. John also came to meet Dave Watson, fire lighting expert and had some one-on-one tuition at The Outdoors Show 2008 where we filmed this clip.

Bushcraft & Survival Skills Magazine boost troops’ morale in Afghanistan

Bushcraft & Survival Skills, the UK’s first bushcraft magazine, have just received a wonderful letter and footage from 3 troop, 8 Armoured Engineer squadron, 26 regiment, based in Helmand, Afghanistan with 1 Royal Anglian Battle Group.

SSgt John Francis received the publication, Bushcraft & Survival Skills Magazine, from his wife, who sends copies of the magazine out regularly to keep up morale. SSgt Francis commented, ‘To help keep the lads entertained I thought that I would impress them with my knowledge of bushcraft and try to pass some on to them’.  The film shows that it certainly does that, as the troops attempt to make a fire using the fire-saw article written by firelighting expert, Dave Watson, founder of Woodland Survival Crafts based in Derbyshire.

After much time, energy, sweat and laughter the troop only have a little smoke and lots of sweat to show for their hard work… in the end they resort to using one of their cigarettes to create the ember!

The staff at Bushcraft & Survival Skills Magazine have thoroughly enjoyed watching their film, shot by ‘John Boy’ (LCpl Astbury). In fact, we have arranged places for them on one of Dave Watson’s firelighting courses at the end of March where they will develop their firelighting skills and pursue their interest in bushcraft.
